A Small Quiet Temple in Kitakyushu
Welcome to Hōjuji Temple.
Hōjuji Temple (Hōrinzan Hōjuji) is a small Shin Buddhist temple located in a quiet residential area of Kitakyushu, Japan.
The temple has been part of the local community for nearly 100 years.
Visitors are welcome to experience the calm and peaceful atmosphere of this living temple.
Visiting
If you wish to visit the temple, please contact us in advance.
Because this is a small temple, visits are limited to small groups (about 1–4 people).
Please be respectful and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the temple.
The priest may not always be available.
Visiting hours (by appointment)
14:00 – 16:00
Please note that visits may not be possible during temple services, events, or activities.
Communication
The priest’s English is limited, but he will do his best to welcome visitors.
Simple English or translation apps are perfectly fine.
Temple Garden
The temple has a small traditional garden that can be viewed from inside the main hall.
Visitors may quietly sit and enjoy the garden view from the main hall.
A stone lantern and moss in the garden reflect the quiet passage of time.
Seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year.
At the entrance you can also see a small water bowl with medaka fish.
Temple Path
The stone path leading to the temple was made from paving stones of an old streetcar line that once ran near the temple many years ago.
Photography
Photography is allowed in the temple grounds.
Please avoid photographing inside the main hall.
Please also avoid photographing people without permission.
